Empowering Communities Through Arthritis Care

Who We are

Our Impact

How It Works

We are a community-based organization dedicated to reducing the health and social impact of arthritis in Western Kenya. Our approach goes beyond treating symptoms - we build sustainable healthcare infrastructure that communities can own and maintain.

Founded in rural Kakamega County, we understand the unique challenges facing underserved populations. Our team combines healthcare expertise with deep community knowledge, creating solutions that are both medically sound and culturally appropriate. Through partnerships with local groups, government agencies, and dedicated volunteers, we're transforming how rural communities access specialized healthcare.

Our impact spans four counties across Western Kenya - Kakamega, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, and Bungoma - reaching communities where specialized arthritis care was previously inaccessible. In our most recent World Arthritis Day medical camp alone, we treated 127 clients including adults, youth, and children from areas like Sinoko Ward, Nzoia Ward, and neighboring counties.

Our healthcare delivery extends beyond arthritis treatment. Through our partnership with Sabatia Eye Hospital and Lions Club of Vihiga, we provided comprehensive eye care services to 371 clients, conducting screenings for all patients, treating 250 cases of eye infections, issuing 100 prescription glasses, and referring 70 cases for surgery. This demonstrates our commitment to holistic community health.

Beyond clinical services, we've created sustainable economic opportunities through connected projects. Our Upendo Women Group has established fish farming operations with 53 active members, providing both nutrition and income generation. The Machine Vision Youth Group cultivates crops including beans, dhania, and sukuma wiki on donated land, addressing food security while creating meaningful youth engagement.

Our Ride4Arthritis events have evolved from 16 cyclists in 2020 to 63 participants in 2023, generating national media coverage across all major television and radio networks. This growth reflects expanding community support and has attracted recognition from county governments and Kenya's Health Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Deborah Mulongo, who visited our facility following the latest ride.

Our model centers on three integrated approaches: direct healthcare delivery, community empowerment, and sustainable fundraising.

Monthly Medical Camps: We bring specialists directly to rural communities, providing free consultations and treatments while training local health workers.

Connected Projects: We partner with local groups to create economic opportunities that support long-term health and wellness - from nutrition-focused fish farming to medicinal plant cultivation.

Awareness & Advocacy: Through events like Ride4Arthritis, we generate funds while educating communities about arthritis prevention and management.

Each element reinforces the others, creating a comprehensive approach that addresses both immediate healthcare needs and underlying social determinants of health.
